James specialises in disputes concerning charterparties, COAs, ship sale and purchase, cargo claims and commodities. He has handled many hundreds of such cases. He also advises on non-contentious matters in shipping, trading and upstream petroleum contracts, such as the effects of and amendments to standard and unusual forms and contracts, and has drafted a major shipowners’ new standard bill of lading terms.
In addition to his core advisory and litigation practice in London he has given evidence on matters of English Law to courts and tribunals around the world, including the US, the Far East and Estonia, and conducts arbitration proceedings in Singapore and Hong Kong.
The majority of James’ practice concerns confidential arbitrations but several of his Court cases have been reported, including:
- The Michalakis [2009] EWHC 588 (Comm)
- The Chada Naree (2012) 862 LMLN 2
- The Wisdom C [2014] 2 Lloyd’s Rep. Plus 62
- The Miracle Hope [2021] 1 Lloyd’s Rep. 533
Among James’ loyal clients are P&I Clubs, oil majors, large shipowners, and high-profile charterers and traders.
James studied law at Southampton University (LLB), Inns of Court School of Law (BVC) and University College London (LLM Maritime Law).
