Angus joined the firm in 2007 having qualified and practised as a commercial litigation and shipping lawyer in South Africa. He is also a South African notary public and conveyancer.
Angus’ main areas of practice are disputes under charterparties, COAs, ship sale and purchase, and cargo claims, but he also handles claims arising out of damage to superyachts, yachts, bulk carriers and tankers.
He has acted for both owners and charterers in numerous arbitrations concerning high value disputes covering bunker quality and quantity, off-hire and final accounting disputes, under performance, cargo damage including heavy lift cargo, dangerous cargo disputes including liquefaction and DRI claims, ICA claims, demurrage claims, early redelivery disputes, and hull fouling disputes. Despite the majority of Angus’s practice being in arbitration, he also has experience conducting matters in the High Court.
Angus acted for the charterers in the reported decision of The Wren  2 Lloyd’s Rep. 370, regarding the assessment of damages for early redelivery of a vessel in circumstances where there is no available market at the time of termination of a charterparty for a replacement charterparty covering the unexpired period and the replacement market revives at a later stage.
He also acted for the owners in a reported arbitration decision concerning the effect of the addition of the words “and direction” on the responsibility for cargo operations under Clause 8 of the NYPE form.
Angus has spent a period overseas on secondment for a leading P&I Club which has given him practical knowledge regarding the claims handling process and the effective resolution of a claim from a Club’s perspective.
Angus graduated with an LLB (cum laude) from the University of Port Elizabeth (now the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University), was admitted as an attorney in South Africa in 2001, obtained an LLM in Maritime Law from University College London in 2003 and qualified as a solicitor in 2004.
In his free time, Angus is a golf fanatic who spends as much time in bunkers as he does on bunker disputes.
